Pandemonium by Daryl Gregory

SF/fantasy author Daryl Gregory told SCI FI Wire that his novel Pandemonium takes place in an alternate America where “demonic possession” has been frequently but randomly occurring since the 1940s.

“The demons take the form of Jungian archetypes dressed up in pop-culture clothing, so ordinary people are possessed by things that act like superheroes, pulp monsters, characters from folklore,” Gregory said in an interview. “The problem is that nobody knows if these possessions are a psychological disorder, a neurological disease, real spiritual attacks, evidence of alien telepaths or what. Every religion, scientist and fringe group makes their own sense of the evidence. It’s chaos–hence the title.”
