The City of Ember (The First Book of Ember) by Jeanne DuPrau

Saoirse Ronan, the 14-year-old Irish star of the upcoming fantasy film City of Ember, told SCI FI Wire that director Gil Kenan strived to remain as faithful as possible to the Jeanne DuPrau youth novel on which it’s based.

Ronan, an Oscar nominee for Atonement, plays Lina Mayfleet, who lives in the underground city of Ember, where the lights are flickering precariously and the generator that powers the city is fast approaching the end of its two-century lifespan. With the mayor (Bill Murray) either ignoring or incapable of dealing with what’s happening before his eyes, Lina teams with a boy, Doon Harrow (Harry Treadaway), to try to save the day.
