The City of Ember (The First Book of Ember) by Jeanne DuPrau

Gil Kenan, director of the fantasy film City of Ember, told SCI FI Wire that he considers the story the ultimate tale of light vs. darkness. The movie is based on Jeanne DuPrau’s youth novel.

The story follows two teens, Lina (Saoirse Ronan) and Doon (Harry Treadaway), who team up to save the title city, an underground community whose generator is threatening to cease operation and plunge the town into darkness.
