Soulless (The Parasol Protectorate) by Gail Carriger Victorian high-society full of vampires, werewolves, dirigibles, and tea-drinking. A description much like the one above intrigued me – just a bit tongue-in-cheek, but also self-aware enough to earn a smile. Soulless by Gail Carriger (Book Depository, Powell’s Books, Indiebound) does indeed meet that description…and more (there is

To create characters for your fantasy novel you must consider your market and create characters that your readers are able to relate to, and care for. This does not mean that you reveal all there is about your characters in the first few lines, your characters a best revealed a little as the plot unfolds, a little intrigue goes a long way. But your characters should be developed before you put your pen to paper.

Monster Republic by Ben Horton As a relatively short read, Monster Republic doesn’t stop from the opening chapter. What is enjoyable is the fact that it gives character development along the way while also building the story and background effectively. Not only that, but Horton puts the characters in the situation we would be in

The Last Kingdom (The Saxon Chronicles Series #1) by Bernard Cornwell I would whole-heartedly recommend this book to fantasy readers. Yeah, the book is historical fiction, not fantasy, but it hits all the same spots (at least for me). If you are a fan of Ruckley, Joe Abercrombie, George R.R. Martin, or Paul Kearney (The

Blackbringer (Dreamdark) by Laini Taylor This was a fun and different read. Other than my difficulty adjusting to the pacing and the dialog in the beginning, I can’t think of any critiques! I definitely recommend it. In upcoming books, I would love to see more interaction between human and faery. I’d also like to see
