The Tenderness of Wolves: A Novel by Stef Penney
The Tenderness of Wolves by Stef Penney has a setting and a cast of characters that entrances. It is winter in the northern territories of Canada, 1867. The wilderness is merciless and the small enclaves of human habitation sparse. A fur trader is murdered in the small settlement of Dove River. First a teenage boy goes missing, then the native American suspect in the case and the boy’s mother follow his tracks out into the cold, vast unforgiving forests. They are followed by investigators looking for justice (but mostly for a hidden fur cache). The heat (not literally) turns up as the characters are tried, tested, and transformed by one another and the elements.
