The Silver Swan by Benjamin Black
This is the second novel by John Banville writing as Benjamin Black, and the second outing for the pathologist Quirke, a new star of the whodunit, here caught up in a ‘grimy suburban melodrama’ of murder, adultery, revenge, sex, drugs and sadomasochism. Freed from the Booker judges’ gaze, Banville indulges a passion for the smoky private-dick flick, raiding its clichés and imagery: Quirke is an orphan, widower, alcoholic.
