SF author David Freer told SCI FI Wire that his new novel (written in collaboration with Eric Flint), A Slow Train to Arcturus, was born out of a discussion between the two about how the prevalence of faster-than-light travel in SF has caused it to lose some of that feel of plausibility.

“Eric said he liked the idea of doing a ‘generation ship’ story someday, but it would have to be something new and different,” Freer said in an interview. “Eric started with pointing out the principal ‘weaknesses’ of slow ships–they’re slow, and when you get there, the new world may be uninhabitable, and then you have to start all over again.”
